Word Processor and Floating Secretary (6 month fixed-term) - Central Business Support Team -
Crown Law provides legal advice and representation to the Crown in matters affecting the executive government, particularly in the areas of criminal, public and administrative law.
The Central Business Support Team provides word processing services and a floating secretarial service to the various legal teams. We are currently seeking an experienced WP operator/legal secretary to work between these two services for a period of 6 months.
The successful applicant will provide WP services Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between the hours of 3pm and 7pm and floating secretarial support every Wednesday between 8.30am and 5pm – a total of 23.5 hours per week. Some flexibility to provide extra hours during periods of staff absences will be required.
In-depth knowledge and experience of Office 2007 is essential with particular emphasis on Word formatting and styles. Prior knowledge and experience in the use of computer based systems for document creation and management is also essential as is a fast and accurate typing ability.
The ideal candidate will be a team player possessing a results-orientated attitude, effective time management skills and will be comfortable working within a legal environment. The candidate will be conscientious about their own work while also willing to help other people when needed.

Associate Crown Counsel - Criminal Law Team (8 months fixed-term) -
Crown Law, based in Wellington, provides legal advice and representation services to the Crown. A fixed-term vacancy has arisen within our Criminal Law Team, and applications are now invited from individuals who are seeking a position in a supportive and stimulating work environment.
The core work of the Criminal Law Team is to provide advice to the Solicitor-General on matters concerning criminal process and to conduct criminal appeals in the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. The team has responsibility for the supervision and management of the prosecution of indictable crime through the national Crown Solicitor network. The Team provides advice, legal research and support to these Crown Solicitors.
The Team is also responsible for bringing applications in respect of proceeds of crime, advising on mutual assistance in criminal matters and extradition, representing the Crown in judicial review matters arising from the criminal prosecution process and acting for the Police, Parole Board and Corrections Department in civil litigation.
Due to high volumes of work the successful candidate will be working predominately if not exclusively on extraditions.
We are seeking to appoint an experienced lawyer, on a fixed-term contract until November 2010. The successful candidate will need to possess strong oral and written communication skills and excellent relationship management skills. You will also need to have proven legal research skills and be able to work effectively in a busy team environment.

Counsel - Treaty Issues and International Law Team -
Crown Law, based in Wellington, provides legal advice and representation services to the Crown. Crown Law is headed by the Solicitor-General who is the senior professional legal advisor to the government and its chief advocate in the courts.
Applications are invited from lawyers for positions at junior and intermediate levels within the Treaty Issues and International Law Team, who are seeking employment in a supportive and stimulating work environment.
Are you interested in advising government on Crown-Maori relations and international law issues? If so, this position will appeal to you. The Team provides legal advice to all levels of government on Crown-Maori, Treaty of Waitangi, Treaty settlement, and aboriginal title/customary rights issues, as well as on matters of international law. It represents the Government in litigation before the courts at all levels, and large-scale regional inquiries into historical claims before the Waitangi Tribunal as well as contemporary and urgent inquires.

Assistant Crown Counsel - Criminal Process and Human Rights Group -
Crown Law, based in Wellington, provides legal advice and representation services to the Crown. A vacancy has arisen within our Criminal Process and Human Rights Group and applications are now invited from lawyers who have an interest in human rights law and are seeking to advance their litigation skills in a supportive and stimulating work environment.
The Human Rights Team provides a wide range of advice and representation services to the Crown primarily in matters relating to the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, the Human Rights Act 1993 and immigration. It is responsible for a significant amount of civil litigation and the provision of high-level advice on the consistency of legislative and policy proposals with New Zealand’s domestic and international human rights obligations. The Human Rights Team also provides advice and representation to the Department of Corrections.
We are seeking to appoint a lawyer with up to three years post admission experience with an aptitude for human rights law issues. The successful candidate will have a strong academic record and excellent oral and written communication skills. You will have proven legal research skills and be able to work effectively in a busy team environment.
