Counsel - Law Officer Team -
Crown Law, based in Wellington, provides legal advice and representation services to the Crown. Crown Law is headed by the Solicitor-General who is the senior legal advisor to the government and its chief advocate in the courts.
Due to increasing workloads, vacancies have arisen within the Law Officer Team, and applications are now invited from lawyers who are seeking full-time or part-time employment in a supportive and stimulating work environment.
The Law Officer Team provides legal support for the Law Officer functions of the Attorney-General and Solicitor-General. The team also advises and represents the Crown on a wide range of constitutional and public law issues. This includes electoral law, the judiciary and judicial conduct, and the vexatious litigant and charitable trust law jurisdictions. The team also works in such diverse areas as coronial law and privacy law, and provides input into legal policy formation.
Law Officer team members regularly represent the Crown in the High Court and the Court of Appeal and also appear in specialist jurisdictions such as the Human Rights Review Tribunal.
We are seeking to appoint lawyers, with strong oral and written communication skills and excellent relationship management skills. The successful candidates will also need to have proven legal research skills and be able to work effectively in a busy team environment.
One of the roles will suit a lawyer with at least 12 months post admission experience, with an interest in constitutional and public law.
The second role is part-time for 3 days per week and would suit an experienced practitioner, who has a background in the areas identified.
